Poseidon drew the sea when the three brothers split creation, and he rules it exactly the way the sea behaves: calm and giving one hour, then without warning a wall of water and a heaving of the ground. The Greeks called him the Earth-Shaker and blamed him for earthquakes as readily as for storms, and no one put out to sea without a word to him first. He struck the rock and made the first horse. He struck again and brought up a saltwater spring. One trident, creation and ruin in the same motion.
You do not befriend a god like that. You respect the water and hope to be remembered kindly.
