Between November 1966 and December 1967, the town of Point Pleasant logged sighting after sighting of a winged thing near the old TNT bunkers and the river: man-sized, moth-shaped, fast enough to chase a car uphill. Then on a December evening the Silver Bridge over the Ohio buckled at rush hour and went down, and forty-six people went with it. The sightings stopped almost at once. Ever since, the town has wondered whether the creature was the cause, the witness, or the warning.
The Mothman became less a monster than a question: what do you do when the strange thing in the dark turns out to have been trying to tell you something.
