Thor's hammer could level a mountain or drop a giant in a single throw and always return to his hand, but its older office was holy. They raised Mjolnir over newlyweds, over newborns, over the dead, to hallow and protect them. The same tool that shattered the enemies of the gods also made a thing sacred. Dwarves forged it with a handle a touch too short, because Loki, in the shape of a fly, kept biting the smith at the bellows.
That is the whole of Thor in one object: brute force and fierce protection, the storm that wrecks the hall and the storm that waters the field.
