Every other creature in the old stories comes from somewhere outside, but the werewolf comes from within: an ordinary person who, when the moon rounds to full, cannot stop the animal underneath from taking the wheel. The folklore is everywhere, from the Greek king turned wolf for his cruelty to the witch-trial confessions of medieval Europe, and it always whispers the same uneasy thing. There is a beast in here, it is older than your manners, and on the wrong night it gets out.
That is why the howl still lands. It is not fear of a wolf in the woods. It is suspicion of the wolf in the mirror.
